Near the start of this year I upgraded my mobile phone and chose the iPhone4. With this came a world of apps that make the iPhone really come alive. One of which was an app called Foursquare, actually I’m still deciding how I could use this with regards to my ‘real life’ work, anyhow, I do see value – however small at this stage. This app finds it’s origin in the city of New York, you have to go there if you’ve never been.
How it works is every time you go someplace, like the Cinema or restaurant or wherever you may find yourself, you ‘Check-in’ and if you Check in enough times and you will become the ‘Mayor’ of that place or establishment. This doesn’t mean much in real life, but it may boost your ego anyway.
Some forward thinking businesses are beginning to use these ‘check ins’ to their advantage. Some restaurants are offering free meals or drinks to the ‘Mayor’ of their establishment, thereby increasing the foot traffic to their store. Clever.
In January this year Foursquare themselves released an interesting info Graphic. They say they grew 3400% in 2010, not bad for an app that only launched in March 2009. They already have 10 million users, 4 million since January and are ranked 583 most visited website on planet earth. On further study of this info graphic I noted that this app comes in VERY useful when wanting the ladies to know you are working out at the gym and even better if you the ‘Mayor’ of the said fitness establishment. California is the top State in the USA when it comes to Checking In at the gym. Do these testosterone filled geeks have the bodies to match?….. you know in ‘real life’
